Health and Beauty through Sunlight

Sunlight is not always bad. We are conditioned to let our first thought of the sun be about the damage it can do, but small amounts of sunlight exposure (early in the day, before the sun is at it’s brightest, which is between 10 AM and 4 PM) can be good for you actually.

How much sunlight is enough or even too much?
The answer to this question is different for everyone. It’s depending on your skin-tone and personal health-condition and health-history.
Generally scientists are convinced that 5 to 15 minutes a day if you are light-skinned, and up to 30 minutes a day if you are dark-skinned, is about a reasonable amount of sun-exposure to get the most out of it (without developing any health problems). If you want to stay out long you may get the same effect if you use sunscreen; yet always talk to your doctor about what is best for you.

Vitamin-D
The sun’s UV-rays help your body to make Vitamin-D. This nutrient is important for your bones, blood cells as well as your immuunsystem and it helps you with the take-in of minerals, like phosphorus and calcium.

Protection
Did you know that people who live in places with very little sunlight may be more likely to develop disease, including lung, breast, colon, prostate. Scientists think their odds of getting serious conditions like multiple sclerosis, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease may be even higher as well, which might be linked to lower levels of vitamine-D.

Early morning sunlight
Sunlight in the early morning is good for you, because it helps you to get to a better sleep at night and the light helps to set your body’s (internal) biological clock.
More early morning sunlight (20 - 30 minutes between 8 AM en 12 AM; the earlier, the better) helps to keep your body-weight in check. Scientists found that sun rays might be able to shrink fat cells below your skin’s surface.
More sunlight and more exercise are both good for you, if you want to keep your health and your weight in check.

Emotional wellbeing - neuro-psychology
Sometimes seasonal depression is treated with light therapy. Serotonin is a chemical in your brain, that is boosted with the help of sunlight. You may have more energy and be able to keep calm and positively able to focus with natural or artificial light.

Enjoy those beautiful sunrays to the utmost.
